Monthly Bloggers’ Meetup in Tokyo

Me trying to look olderStill no news to report from me. I work, I go home, lather, rinse, repeat. Next month, I turn 40 years old. It’s not fair. Not so long ago I was a teenager trying to grow a mustache in an attempt to look older. I can’t figure out what I did that was so horrible as to deserve this fate.

I don’t feel 40. I don’t think I look it either. People my age don’t look young anymore. They’re covered with wrinkles and cellulite and have specks of gray in their thinning hair. But at least they tend to have their stuff together. My stuff is lying in piles around the house. Am I allowed to have a middle aged crisis now? Because I think I’ve already starting having one. A very quiet one. Mostly. Until right now.

Changing the subject to the subject of this post, a bunch of bloggers who live in and around Tokyo meet at The Dubliners’ Irish Pub in Shibuya on the third Wednesday of every month at 7 pm. That’s tomorrow. I will be there, and I will drink (but not smoke) and probably moan a little about turning 40 because it stinks, although it’s not as bad as the alternative, which is dying.

And if anyone makes fun of me for getting old, I will beat them senseless with my stainless steel walker.

  1. I thought I had a problem with just turning 34 🙁 aging sucks.
I remember the days when I was around 14 carefree in the 80’s at my gf chilling to music. Im off to cry a little now.

Cheer up Rich get out of the city and do something different with your family! go go go before it eats you up.

  2. I’m 22 at the beginning of next month. Haha! I’m going through a mid-life crisis now! I just finished reading Hunter Thompson’s the rum diary, for about the 16th time. Hunter wrote that piece of pure perfection when he was only twenty two, so now I’m reaching the same age, I’m asking myself what great and wonderful things I’ve done. It’s kind of depressing, but hey, I’m only 21! What in the hell do I know?!

On the bright side Rich, you really don’t look 40 and I mean that. Besides, don’t they say life begins at 40?

  3. Well I mean your still healthy and living too, so you have to be happy about that. You have two beautiful kids who love you and a whole community people who love to hear what you have to say. So Rich, life can’t be that bad, age is a number and yes your getting older, but we all are.

  4. If you really feel so bad about turning 40 soon, just think about me. OK? I think you already feel better now 🙂

  5. If you really feel so bad about turning 40 soon, just think about me.

You have the body of a 19 year old figure skater, so you don’t count. 😉 And I seem to remember you freaking out to some degree when you turned 40.

  6. console yourself in that time is just a human construct. There should be real concrete points at which you earn the title of a 40 year old. Like those things you mentioned. Until then, you can deny it flagrantly.
Or look at it this way, it’s only like 15-20 years before you get to take advantage of senior discounts. But they probably don’t have those in Japan do they? seeing as everyone seems to be a senior there.
How about this? You can do a special on what it is like to be old in Japan…but you’ll have to wait another 30 years to do that.

  7. I thought I had one foot in the grave when I turned 30. Then years went by and I find that I’m still here. So I guess you will be, too. Ha!ha!ha! I suppose the passing of a decade brings on that: Where the hell did my life go? Then you start to get a life and appreciate the little things.

Kidding aside, I’m glad to have met you at the Bloggers’ Meetup this evening at the Dubliners’. I hope you enjoyed your film on your iPod on your way home.

  8. Rich, it could be much, much worse. You could be turning 40, but making lame jokes about it being the first anniversary of your 39th birthday or even lying about your age, which would make you 40 and pathetic. At least you’re not pathetic.

And, hey, as you said, turning 40 beats the hell out of the alternative.
