Mixi has had some bad press recently when a members site was hacked and personal information and photos, some of them of his girlfriend in her birthday suit , were released into cyberspace. You can listen to a podcast from Herro Flom Japan about the scandal.

a personal computer breech that exposed the lives of one couple as they became unwitting stars of the blogoshpere and the fallout that followed – but went largely unreported in mainstream media. Read JGoth.com's summary or hear the full details in Herro Flom Japan's podcast (an unfortunate name, but a great podcast).

entries here refer to "mixi" and sometimes "identity." Earlier this week, I received visits from people using Google (mainly) to search for "mixi identity." I didn't understand this sudden interest until I read fukumimi's (Shin Fukushige) post. addenda podcast

    4. mixi – By far the most popular Japanese social networking site, mixi made an IPO at $15,000 a share this year. I recommended buying and shorting. It shot up to $32,000 a share the next day before plummeting in the wake of the “Ass-Hair Burger” scandal (Umm…that’s Japan for you). 3. Google – I guess it’s hard to find. 2. 2ちゃんねる – 2 Channel, Japan’s biggest (by far) message board site. It’s anonymous and this is where the gloves come off. Rich,

Didn't know you started podcasting again. Welcome back. Great story. When I first heard the title, I thought the podcast was going to be about Mos Burger with their strange menu.

    Regards,
    Dan

Rich, it's me again. I'm writing this as I'm listening. I found out that you were podcasting again via Podshow's Plastic Soul Band page. The "Who's played this artist…" showed that you played the PSB.

Actually I was the guy that told them about the Podsafe Music Network in February. And I have played them extensively on my podcast. They really are great!. I've seen them live numerous times and my October 6th show features Kiyoko live, doing Janis Joplin. Her idol is Janis Joplin – and she kicked ass at that show. Also featured is a yet unreleased single called "Kyo wa Nandaka".

Here's a link to the show – listen from about 21 minutes into the podcast:

I'm kinda back. When I have both the time and something interesting to say, I try to put one out.

The weekly gossip rags like Flash broke the burger story yesterday. It's sad for the victims that most of them published the private pics and described which cute cute celebrities she looks like. It entices the general public to search for them. That poor couple's lives have been destroyed.

One thing for sure, I'm no longer interested in getting a Mixi account.

And if you want to see them live, I'll keep you posted. They're supposed to have a show in November in Kichijoji. After that the next show is January 13 in Kichijoji. Let's get together at one of these shows.

  • 11 maiku Windows XP Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7 // Oct 20, 2006 at 4:28 pm

wow, poor girl. what a loser for taking advantage of someone by spreading illegaly obtained personal stuff like that. hopefully that guy gets whats comming to him.

anyways, I'm really enjoying listening to the podcasts! it feels so nostalgic checking the feed for new shows and listening to them when they come out XD

  • 12 Rich Pav Windows 2000 Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7 // Oct 20, 2006 at 4:54 pm

Not just her, but her family, her friends, her employer…

I saw a screenshot online from a TV news program that two people were arrested. On the way home tonight I'm going to pick up a few of the gossip rags to see how they covered it.

It wasn't just two people passing the photos around–more like hundreds or thousands of people. And "ass hair burger" and her real name are top search engine queries.

I guess it's hard for people not involved in the Japanese online community to understand how huge this incident became. Mixi has 7 million subscribers, and a lot of them don't hide their identies. This was a real wake-up call to be more careful from now on.

What I can't understand is why Mixi reacted so heavy-handedly by deleting so many accounts with complete disregard as to whether or not they were involved. Did somone in power who doesn't understand the Internet put the fear of God into them? That's what tarnished their reputation the most. Pissing off bloggers is a bad idea. They tend to complain in a big way to an enormous audience. I was hoping to get a Mixi account, but I've changed my mind.

BTW, if you ever want to explain MySpace to someone in Japan, you have to tell them "it's like Mixi" because they've never heard of it. YouTube, on the other hand, is all the rage here.

I definitely want to go to their next live show. Please keep me posted.

That's an interesting URL you posted. I didn't know you could do that with FeedBurner.

This is probably the best band you've featured so far – love them! I'll definitely be looking for their website. Also, I think you've captured the essence of podcasting. It's informal and spontaneous. I know you prefer the videocasting, which I really enjoy as well, but you do a great job with the podcast. I was really happy you picked it up again, even if it's only when the mood strikes you. Again, that's the spirit of the thing. Keep it up and thanks!!!

did you say "exploding star"? maybe you're looking for the word: nova? great podcast. btw, when you spoke to someone when it sounded like you were done doing whatever you were doing, i thought you said "gozaimasu…" i was just in Japan and i thought i heard a couple of people use it and what little nihongo i know it is used as a suffix like in arigatō gozimasu. so is this a new slang or hip-speak? i know the Japanese love to shorten words. thanks!
