The HFJ DVD, Vol. 1

I’m putting all the original full-resolution DV video files onto a DVD to send to my family back home. Would anyone else like a copy? (If anyone says yes, I’ll be surprised.) I figure $10 + shipping is fair. If you ever put money into my PayPal tipjar, then to say thank you I’ll charge only $5 + shipping. And if I can figure out a way to let you download the ISO and burn your own copy, then no shipping fee, obviously. Lastly, if you ever did me a huge favor like bring me Kraft Macaroni & Cheese or send me a MacOS 9 CD, if you want one I’ll send it to you for free.

Here’s a list of all the videos I’ve put up and which of them will be on the DVD:

  • Goin’ To Work (The 1st ever video from 2005 June 25) – Low res, too ugly for DVD
  • Tokyo Disney Sea Videoblog – Low res, ditto
  • Meal Ticket – Ditto
  • A Video Tour of Roppongo – Ditto.
  • Conveyor Belt Sushi – Ditto. All these were taking with my Sony Clie PDA.
  • Apple Store Shibuya – If someone really wants it, I’ll recreate it. I didn’t save the full res version.
  • A Walk Through a Supermarket – Same as above. I hate this video (because it makes me motion sick), but it’s popular on YouTube.
  • House Tour: On DVD at full resolution
  • How to Open a Bottle of Lamune: Ditto
  • The Roller Slide at Yu-Land: Ditto
  • The X-Box Lounge: Ditto
  • New Year’s Eve at the Pav’s: Ditto
  • Hatsumode: Ditto
  • Lunch at Grandpa’s on New Year’s: Ditto
  • Swimming at Kusuragi-no-yu: Ditto, and I misspelled Kusurogi. Tough darts.
  • Sleep Clinic Video: Don’t know if I can find the original DV tape. Is it worth looking for?
  • Walking to Work: The Movie: Approx 80% chance I can find the DV tape. I really should try.
  • Herro Flom There: On DVD at full-res
  • The Bug Video: Ditto
  • My First Movie: Not available; re-creating it doesn’t feel right.
  • Andy’s First Vlog: On DVD at full-res
  • Tony’s Turn!: Ditto
  • The Beach is No Place for a Married Man: Ditto

Or, how does this sound? If there are enough people willing to part with $19.95 + shipping, I’ll offer the following:

  • I’ll definitely find all the lost originals mentioned above
  • If they fit, I’ll add the crappy Sony Clie vids at the end.
  • I’ll add subtitles to Tony’s video, without complaining.
  • I’ll finally edit together the other two videos I welched on back in January (Lunch From Hell, Indoor Fishing)
  • I have footage shot long ago that I never used or even mentioned. If there are enough people willing to spend $19.95 to watch it, I’ll finally edit it. There’s probably enough for at least three more videos, maybe more.

Whether or not anyone’s interested in a DVD, I’ll keep making videocasts whenever I can.

“What about podcasts,” you ask? I ought to make a podcast to answer that question. I have a lot of thoughts on it. It’s a bit complicated.

  1. Hmm… you’ve put me in a tough spot. On one hand, I’m going to feel like some pyschopath who is interested in discreetly viewing the internals of your life. On the other, I’m going to support a new form of art, where one documents a small portion of their life to share with others. However, while I prefer to agree that I am the latter, society in general and individuals who see it would choose otherwise… hmm…screw society i’m up for one!

As I said before in response to your “Goodbye Flom Japan” post… “The thing I liked most about your work was the rawness of it. It was life, both the good and the bad. You achieved something artistic and phenomenal. Your podcast in a way allowed me to experience things I never have.”

I hope that this idea of blogging goes mainstream. It would be a whole lot better than myspace.

I’ll buy one. Which one depends on if you have enough of the $20 copies to make the project worthwhile.

    1. I will call it The Brutal Lunch. Last night I was trying to remember what you called it. Sometimes I can tell my vocabulary is shrinking from lack of use.

  2. No! I won’t pay a single yen for this. Here’s an idea: share the .iso with bittorrent. You aren’t a celebrity yet.

    1. Yep, I expected to hear that from someone. I like giving my work away to people, and I’ll continue to do so when I can. But after all the effort and money I’ve put into HFJ, I don’t feel the least guilty offering a DVD to try to recoup a little of the cost.

If someday you manage to create something of value to others (burgers and fries don’t count), perhaps you’ll understand.

  3. Hi Rich,

Well I think its a good idea to start making some money since your pod/video cast costed YOU the money and WE enjoyed them! so it is just fair to pay a little for it. Especially if it increases the chances of you doing a podcast again :p I wish I was in a positon I could tip you on your paypal account, but I’m only an 18 year old student and as such not applicable for a credit card here. When I have a creditcard later on, I will happily give you a tip, as far as my financial situation permits :p

    1. Bennie you can use paypal to automatically withdrawal from a checking. Thats what I still do even though I have a credit card now.

      1. Thanks for the tip! I didn’t realize you can send money from a regular bank account to a PayPal account. This way it will be easy to pay on the internet without borrowing dad’s creditcard.

  4. I checked your site for the first time in a while, and am pleasantly surprised to see you back! Reading through all the recent comments, I think that aside from the few folks that seem to hang on your every word, I doubt most people want the DVD version. You could sell memberships allowing exclusive access, like a porn site. Or maybe put up some teaser video or audio with a Paypal link, and when pledges hit $100 or whatever you post the full version.

  5. OK, I’ll put it differently – I think you’ll sell “a few”. Great stuff, but not the kind of entertainment for which you make popcorn and dim the lights. I think an NPR type pledge drive is a better model – just my 2 cents. Thanks.

    1. I wasn’t trying to piss you off, but it seems like I might have. If I do the membership thing, then I’m making a commitment to filling it with content on a regular schedule. I can’t do that because this isn’t my full-time job. Far from it, in fact.

  6. im up for a 20 dollar dvd, ive been putting up my photography as desktops on my own personal site for years and i have yet to see a simge dime so i know the feeling of wishing that the costs of giving and giving could be offset somehow by some reader suport. i would be happy to support a fellow blogger. especially with as diverse 0and interesting as it all is to me. (not to mention the extra videos

  7. I don’t know how I missed this before. I was searchingthe archives for the trip to suzume temple and came across this post. You still selling DVD’s?

  8. It’s on the back burner. I only recently got a hold of the software I’d need to put a DVD together but haven’t had the time to learn to use it.
